Whilst I was in Memphis I became a reporter for The Daily Helmsman newspaper for one semester. The University print newspaper had daily editions in both digital and print formats distributed across the city.

Whats to come: Who you’ll be hearing in 2019
By Luke Chapman
King Princess- I cannot rate this beauty enough, this incredible producer, singer and writer from New York is full to the brim with talent unknown. Not only does she bring amazing songs and refreshing vibes, but she brings something new to the table. No Stereotype will fit her, and the queer goddess is going to be RULING 2019 with her upcoming music. You may have already heard the soulful sounds of “1950” doing the rounds on the radio, shortly to be followed by the unmistakable “Pussy is god”. Beautifully named and amazingly curated, P.I.G is an anthem for the youth which needs to be belted and bopped along too. If a song with a title like that is too good for the BBC to resist, then you know she’s onto a winner.
Chlöe Howl- Another name which may not be completely new to you, the incredible and cheeky Howl was nominated for the Brits Critics choice award alongside Ella Eyre and Sam Smith, and made it on to the BBC sounds of 2014 list. Her original campaign began with songs such as “No strings” and “Rumour” which have now racked up over 5 million streams on Spotify, alongside a short stint supporting Ellie Goulding across Europe. She has riled up her devoted fanbase and come back strong into 2018 with the absolute tune of “23” as part of her “work” EP. I’m sure 2019 is going to bring lots to the table for this amazing songstress, and I cant wait to see what’s she’s got lined up for us.
Girli- She’s no longer just that “Girl I met on the internet”, she’s a star. When you’re hanging out with the likes of Declan McKenna (along with supporting him on tour), many good things will follow. The singer’s career began at a very young age, meaning the development witnessed throughout her releases proves extremely prevalent and evocative. The beautiful thing about Girli is her truth, the no bullshit approach to social media, and her individuality in relation to her mental health and LGBT beliefs not only make her a surefire star, but an incredible person. It also helps she has amazing music with songs such as the anthemic “Day Month Second” and most recently “deal with it” which dropped this week. This character is only going up and up, and theres no other way she should be going. Follow the trail to her debut album “Odd one out” due in April.
Alice Merton- MINT is one word to describe this multitalented, multi cultured singer, and it’s also the name of her debut album which came out this month. The constant movement of Alice during her childhood led her to London, Berlin, Frankfurt, Connecticut, and others. But these moves only spurred the singer on, and gave her undying influence which she has called upon for her new album. You may or may not be familiar with the song “No Roots” which epitomises the movements of her younger years, and is a catchy uplifting BOP. The album is just phenomenal, her voice is incredible and there is no end of compliments I could give this lady. I urgently stress the need to check out her music.
Freya Ridings- We’d all be lost without her. Ridings’ beautifully toned and nigh on perfect voice is most definitely something you NEED in your life. Tranquility and oneness comes to me when zoning out with Freya’s music and it feels like she could cure a nation with one song. If your’e looking for a new direction which includes finding inner zen and peace, then listen to her catalogue and it wont take long to find it.
Emily burns- The one and only “Bitch” singer is the sassy salvation come to save everyone. Recently releasing her body of work “Seven scenes from the same summer” she’s certainly on a role, and with radio plays left right and centre, her audience is going to expand quickly. You can fully place your trust within Emily when she releases a new song, you just know its going to be the soundtrack to your day. Within Seven Scenes, the feisty femenista proclaims her sass filled hatred for exes, lovers, and outright bitches. You’ll find one song you immediately relate too, and you’ll never look back.
Elderbrook- Featuring on the smash hit “Cola” by Camelphat, Elderbrook is an icon in his own right. Alexander releases banger after banger, with “Old Friend” creating commotion on the radio, in the clubs, and ALL the best playlists. Although a name in house music is often hard to make, I would put money on this guy sticking around for a long long time. I’m sure you’ll recognise his voice from one of his many house tunes and it’ll all make sense.
2019 looks set to FINALLY be the year of the woman, and with every day bringing about a change in some form to the music industry, this year is going to be a test as to what happens to music, and how it adapts. I for one cant wait to see what is entailed.
